The year is 1612 and Lemuel is a working man. He has rented land from Lord _______ who is an undertaker in the plantation of Ireland. Lemuel has been helping construct new buildings as part of the deal with King James, Lord ________ has to build a fortified stone house with a Bawn around it in return for being granted 1000 acres of land. Lemuel has been able to rent land at a very good price and put his skills as a carpenter to good use with his adze. Times are good and now that weekly markets are being set up in new English style towns he can sell all the butter, cheese and cattle he can produce. He in turn is employing some Irish to help and is teaching them how to farm in the English manner. Lemuel used to be a soldier under Lord Mountjoy and witnessed the defeat of the native Irish under O'Neill at Kinsale in 1601. His military skills are put to good use at the regular musters that are held to practise postures with arms. Although there is now little organised resistance to the English many of the rebels have taken to the forests and mountains and become Woodkern who carry out attacks on unwary travellers and these new settlers. Lemuel admires the bravery of the Irish but they are no match for the latest English weapons. He is in the process of returning from work when he meets some strangers and while apologising and telling his story he gets changed into his best clothes and weapons to attend the local muster. Artefacts included in this presentation are:- period clothing, an adze, weapons / armour of an English solider of the period including a matchlock musket which be demonstrated in full.
